Cover Art, sometimes called box art or store graphic, is a key visual piece used to communicate genre, theme, treatment, and other qualities of a piece of media to a potential audience.
Contents of Cover Art
Cover art traditionally conveys one or more the following:
- The mood of a visual novel
- The genre and other themes of the visual novel
- The setting of a visual novel
- Prominent or important characters
- The publisher and/or developer of the visual novel, often in the corners of box art.
- Promotional blurbs about the visual novel, such as featuring the writing of other noteworthy works, or the participation of other famed individuals.

- Box art for store shelves.
- Photographs or facsimilies of box art for display on web pages, often for demonstrative purposes.
- Capsule graphics of a digital storefronts such as Steam, GOG, itch.io.
- Library graphics to display in digital collections of games
