Cover Art, sometimes called box art or store graphic, is a key visual piece used to communicate genre, theme, treatment, and other qualities of a piece of media to a potential audience.

Contents of Cover Art

Cover art traditionally conveys one or more the following:

  • The mood of a visual novel
  • The genre and other themes of the visual novel
  • The setting of a visual novel
  • Prominent or important characters
  • The publisher and/or developer of the visual novel, often in the corners of box art.
  • Promotional blurbs about the visual novel, such as featuring the writing of other noteworthy works, or the participation of other famed individuals.


Variations of cover art

  • Box art for store shelves.
  • Photographs or facsimilies of box art for display on web pages, often for demonstrative purposes.
  • Capsule graphics of a digital storefronts such as Steam, GOG, itch.io.
  • Library graphics to display in digital collections of games
