Budgeting
Budgeting looms over all visual novels in some shape or form. While more prominent for commercial games, even free games will have to think about what their budget for the project is, how to distribute it, and how to ensure it goes the full project length. The unfortunate truth however, is that it will always be a cas-by-case scenario and there is no answer that will work for every project. Still, steps can be taken to prepare
Designating a Budget
Questions to Ask First
The budget for your game is going to depend on many factors, all of which should be taken into consideration.
- What is your own disposable income. Alongside this, how much of it are you willing to invest?
- Does/Will you game receive any additional funding during/throughout development?
- How many team members will be brought onto the project?
- How long will the project remain in development? (A general estimate is fine in early planning stages.)
- How many assets will need to be created?
Alternative Payment Methods
Game Jams
If you're unable to get funding to pay people but still want to make a game and express yourself creatively, the best option is to recruit volunteers for a non-commercial game for a game jam. Game jams run for short periods of time and participants know not to expect payment in exchange for making a free game. Due to the short timeframe and explicit goal, developers will volunteer for game jam projects like this for many reasons: For fun, practice, expanding their portfolio, passion, and more! This is the BEST way to get started and build a portfolio of works and is Devtalk-approved!
Revenue Sharing
Revenue sharing is not recommended for the reasons listed in this article.
Skill Trading
Skill trading. If you are unable to directly charge for your skills or feel uncomfortable doing so, you can trade your work (writing/design/art/etc) with someone willing to make assets in exchange for works you create. That way, there is equivalent exchange and work being traded.
Stock Assets
Many stock assets on Itch.io and other sites are available for cheap or bulk pricing, and are perfect for those who cannot afford to commission original assets for their games.
Odd jobs
Odd jobs like food delivery services and pet sitting may be a good place to pick up some side income, or doing a part-time job.
