An elevator pitch is a short, pre-prepared speech that describes your game (or company, or skills) in a clear, easily understood way. It's called an 'elevator pitch' as it's designed to hook someone’s attention in the time it takes for someone to ride an elevator to their floor, that being roughly 30-45 seconds. An elevator speech should not take any longer than this to present, however, also avoid being rushed and without properly laid premise.

Closely related to the concept of an elevator pitch, is your log line. A log line is a one-sentence summary of your game that is meant to clearly and concisely describe your game in its most comprehensive form.

Both an elevator pitch and log line can be used in your game's marketing materials (including the store page), to help people quickly understand what your game is about. Both a logline and an elevator pitch is usually listed in a Game design document as the first and most primary aspect of the document.

Features

A well-written elevator pitch should:

  • Have a quick introduction for the games premise.
  • Be concise (75-125 words is a solid standard).
  • Highlight the game's main conflict and goal.
  • Highlight the main features of the game, alongside any features that may set the game apart from other games in its genre.
  • Target a specific audience.

Examples

  • "'A Wizard's Lament' is a point-and-click adventure game set in a high fantasy magical world. The player must solve puzzles, master alchemy, study spell casting, and make difficult choices between who they consider friend or foe, and as to how far they are willing to go, pushed by the drive to hurry as they race against time to save their loved ones from an ancient curse that is slowly turning everyone to stone."
  • "In the post-apocalyptic world of 'The Last Survivors', players must scavenge for resources in a desolate wasteland following a nuclear war and learn to build relationships with their fellow survivors, all while fighting for their own survival against corrupt gangs of deadly mutants caused by the fallout. Players must continue pushing and fighting their way through this new world so they can reach the safety of the Utopia that appears on the skyline."
  • "'The Curtains Call', is a gothic horror visual novel about a girl who is tasked with cleaning up her grandfather's old mansion after his death, but discovers she is not alone in the house and instead is being accompanied by the many spirits who call the manor their home. Now she must explore the abandoned rooms and corridors, encountering spirits of those who once lived there, and listen to each of their tragic tales as she works to help lay them to rest."
