Remove some obscure loanwords?

There are a handful of loanword genres here that I feel like are pretty rarely used any more in EVN spaces. For example - moege, nakige, utsuge, gege, mobage, kami/kusoge. How do folks feel about removing those? Iron (talk) 17:59, 19 July 2024 (EST)

I agree that these terms take up a lot of space on the page for very little value, but at the same time it is useful for people interested in VNs to have at least heard of them, at least if they have any interest in engaging with jp vn spaces. Perhaps we can simply have a header for "Japanese Visual Novel Categories" or something and then link to an outside page that summarises them, such as this? Yona (talk) 06:05, 9 May 2025 (PDT)
That's a very fair point. If we want to summarize them, though, I think it should be here on the wiki. Honestly, maybe just splitting them off into a "Loanword genres" section on Genre would work? That source is great by the way - let's add it to the references. Ironnori (talk) 11:40, 12 May 2025 (PDT)
Either a seperate section or even a seperate page sound good to me, do whichever you feel is best :) Yona (talk) 09:53, 16 May 2025 (PDT)

Repeated entries

Should the entries that have their own 1-5 sentence pages (for example Charage) be redirected here? Cygni (talk) 05:42, 17 June 2022 (PDT)

Agreed. Arsym (talk) 07:16, 17 June 2022 (PDT)
It's a good idea Nai (talk) 07:17, 17 June 2022 (PDT)
i've implemented the redirects, if they're expanded on in the future to warrant own articles, feel free to revert papayaisla (talk) 15:18, 17 June 2022 (PDT)

Language and Platforms in Genre

I don't think we should keep the language abbreviations and the platform loan-word in the genre document, but I'm not sure yet where they should be. I think it's useful to have them somewhere, but I don't think available languages, originating languages, or available platforms are a part of visual novel genres. Raising sims, Dating sims and other vn-adjacent game genres

As of right now there seems to be no mention on the wiki of Raising sims. Examples of raising sims for the unfamiliar: Long live the Queen, Princess Maker, Needy Streamer Overload, I was a Teenage Exocolonist

Now, although some may debate the issue, raising sims are not actually visual novels... but they are in some ways related, and several (most notably Long Live the Queen) been made in Renpy. Therefore I think they should have some mention on the wiki. But where to put them? They don't fit under the "vn hybrid" category since they are their own genre. I suppose you COULD call them vn + management game hybrids but I think that is trying to retrofit a convenient label on an existing thing. In my opinion, visual novel-management sim hybrids already exist as their own genre: dating sims.

Speaking of dating sims, they are currently (correctly, in my opinion) acknowledged on the page as a seperate game type from visual novels, as there is a list of "Visual novel-dating sim hybrids"... only for Dating sims to appear later on the page under "Gameplay", suggesting that they are instead a type of visual novel. (I also have opinions on the content of this section but that can wait) Obviously a dating sim cannot both be seperate from a visual novel and also a type of visual novel. While I very much believe they are the former, either way the wiki should be consistent on this matter.

Ok a lot of words and strong nerd opinions to say: Where do these game categories fit on this page? Should Raising Sims (and even Dating Sims) have their own pages? Yona (talk) 06:06, 9 May 2025 (PDT)

Lots of good thoughts here. I'd say go ahead and make the adjustments you feel are most clean & representative, and if there's disagreement, we can tweak as needed! I agree that having a separate page for dating/raising sims would be useful. Perhaps Stat raising games? Ironnori (talk) 11:40, 12 May 2025 (PDT)
