From VNDev Wiki

Having a fully voice acted game is many peoples dream, however, it can be tough to know where to start. The hardest part being choosing a casting platform. There's a lot of different options, and with each option comes many ups and downs. For better or worse, the "best option" can also change wildly based on your budget, project type, and project size.

Here's an extended description of each popular platform!

The very home of this wiki, Devtalk is strong place to start since it hosts a 'recruitment' section in the server full of VA who are VN specific.

How Budget, Medium, & Size Affects Your Choice

As briefly touched on in the Popular Platforms: Extended section, some sites favor certain types of projects more than others, so lets touch on how Budget, Medium/Genre, and Size can affect which platform will be best and how this can affect auditions for your project.

Budget

If you're unsure about your projects budget, see Budgeting first.

Since voice acting is a job for many, if your project is paid and how much the pay is, will greatly affect your project. There are 3 main status's for your games status in this regard:

  • Unpaid: The VA for your projects are like volunteers, they are not paid for their work.

If this is the type of project you have, don't be to scared, their are many hobbyist VA and those looking to build their portfolio.

  • Deferred: The VA for your projects payment will be determined by how successful the game is. This is usually for projects that plan to launch as commercially or be funded by crowdfunding. See Funding for an extended guide.

If this is the type of project you have, make sure you have some form of plan for how you plan to pay VA for each monetary milestone the project reaches before you start casting.

  • Paid: The VA for your projects are paid in some way a set amount, whether it be per word, a set monetary amount, or another decisive form.

If this is the type of project you have, your game is probably commercial and/or has been well funded via some form of crowdfunding (or perhaps your own savings.)

When it comes to picking which is best, its important to think about the scope of your project. Chances are a Game Jam project will not be paid, however, a long term long project with a Kickstarter (or related) may be if it reaches its funding goals.

If you're curious how much you should pay your VA for a paid project, here's a short guide on the "standard".

  • Per Word: .02-.50 USD
  • Per Line: 1-10 USD
