"Amare is a term that helps identify games which still have a similar tone and feel to Otome games, as well as similar story elements - but also have attributes that may set them apart from their more 'traditional' counterparts.
This term was coined by indie game makers who realize their games have diverged from Otome while still maintaining an important overlap that makes these games stand out from other visual novels."
