Selecting a VN engine is one of the first things you'll need to do when creating a visual novel, and it will have lasting impact on your workflow and what you can create. In general, you want something that satisfies the following:

  1. Supports basic VN features (presenting the player with text, images, audio, choices, etc)
  2. Supports your target platform(s)
  3. Has good support by the creator and/or community
  4. Allows you to create additional features if you require them

While engines are created all the time, only a few meet these criteria, and this guide will help inform you about the best choices (as of June 2022).
